Beach Etiquette

When visiting the beach, it’s important to remember a few basic rules and etiquette. Besides protecting flora and fauna, being polite, courteous, and mindful of other beach goers will help create positive experiences for everyone.

Dress Code: Most beaches have a clothing optional policy, but that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all pants off beach. Adhere to the minimum swimwear requirement most beaches have in place to ensure everyone’s comfort. Also, staying covered up is the best prevention for sunburns.

Tune Out: The beach is a great place to relax, kick back, and get away from it all. The only music you need is the sound of the waves breaking on the shoreline. If you’d like to bring a speaker, remember to use it responsibly. Keep the volume low and the beats harmonious.

Litter: The ocean can’t clean itself. Dispose of all your trash in the bins provided. If bins aren’t available, carry out what you carry in. Reduce excessive plastic as much as possible and never ever drop cigarette butts!

Etiquette: Treat the beach like your front yard. Give strangers the same space they’d expect in their own homes. Respect the ocean, ocean life, and boats. Don’t harass wildlife, don’t throw rocks, and don’t be loud and disruptive. Most importantly, give the beach a chance to give back!

Accommodation

When planning an extended stay abroad, many travelers opt for an option that fits the individual requirements. The selection varies from traditional hotels to budget options such as hostels. Here are some of the popular options for finding the perfect place for a long-term rental:

  • Hotels: A classic option that provides luxurious and comfortable rooms, with amenities such as a restaurant, bar and spa services. Many hotels come with packages to tailor to your stay.
  • Apartments: Perfect for extended stays that demand more space and separate living and sleeping areas. Most apartments come fully equipped with necessary appliances such as a fridge, television and washing machine.
  • Villas: Great for larger groups or families, villas are fully furnished and come with private pools and extensive outdoor space. These usually require more effort in finding and booking.
  • Hostels: A budget option, hostels are designed to house groups of travelers in one room. They usually come with basic features such as a common kitchen and living area, but private rooms may also be available.

Many providers will have social media accounts and websites in which to study reviews and room prices. It is important to read everything carefully and get in contact with the service provider for any questions. Some providers may offer amenities such as airport transfers and weekly cleaning services, which can be beneficial during a long-term rental. Depending on the provider, there may be extras such as free Wi-Fi and cable TV included in the rental fees. Finally, be sure to check the distance between your and the places you plan to visit or spend time at during your stay. Knowing this distance ahead of time will help you budget for transport and plan your itinerary.

Weather and Seasonal Information

The weather patterns and seasonal information in a geographic area can greatly influence what an individual does. Whether one is a residential landowner, commercial business owner, or vacationer, knowing what the weather and seasonal trends are will help determine what activities you can participate in and how you will plan accordingly.

Rainfall – Different regions have different rainfall patterns. Depending on location, rainfall can be seasonal, have a large amount between certain months and a very small amount in other months, or can be steady throughout the year. Understanding the rainfall patterns and seasonal trends will help an individual decide the best time to plant gardens and when to water them.

Temperature – An important seasonal factor to consider is temperature. Different regions of the world such as in the United States, can have wide variations in temperature. Some areas may experience high temperatures in summer and extreme cold temperatures in winter and vice versa. Being aware of this will help one plan out outdoor activities, decide when to go skiing, when to camp, and other outdoor activities.

Sunlight – Sunlight is a valuable resource especially for individuals that want to take full advantage of their outdoor activities. Different areas will have different seasonal trends for sunlight so it is important to monitor and understand the amount of sunlight one receives in their area. Knowing how much sunlight one gets can help an individual plan and prepare for activities, when to work on the house or garden and when to take a break.

  • Be aware of seasonal weather patterns such as rainfall, temperature and sunlight.
  • Plan activities accordingly that accommodate the local weather conditions.
  • Monitor seasonal shifts so you can be prepared with the right clothing and equipment.
